George Miller Discusses the Origins of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

At CinemaCon 2024, George Miller shared insights about his upcoming film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, set to hit Italian theaters next month.

The director revealed that the film spans a significant 16 to 18 years of narrative history. He elaborated on the challenges of storytelling within the Mad Max universe, particularly in relation to Fury Road, which unfolds over just three days and two nights. "To tell the story of Fury Road, we had to deal with a lot of exposition," Miller explained. "We needed to understand everything we saw on screen—not just the background of each character, but also every prop, vehicle, and gesture. We crafted Furiosa’s story during the 15 to 16 years before she appeared in Fury Road. Similarly, we developed Max's backstory from the year preceding the events of the film, along with deeper insights into characters like Immortan Joe. One was a screenplay, Furiosa, while the other was more of a novella. We did this for the actors and specifically for the crew, so they would grasp the origins of everything on screen."

Miller noted that after the success of Fury Road, the team felt it was time to focus on Furiosa. "When Fury Road was a hit, we said, 'Now it's time for Furiosa,' and here we are; we just finished last week."

The film features a talented cast, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Alyla Browne, and Tom Burke. It is set to release in the United States on May 24 and will arrive in Italy a day earlier, on May 23.
