Alien: Romulus Offers a Chilling Return to Horror at CinemaCon 2024

The CinemaCon 2024 event recently concluded, showcasing Disney's upcoming titles for 2024 and 2025, including the much-anticipated Alien: Romulus. This new installment in the iconic sci-fi horror franchise, which began with Ridley Scott's groundbreaking film in 1979, promises to bring back the series' terrifying roots.

Hunter Bolding from The Hashtag Show remarked, "From the small amount of footage we were shown, Alien: Romulus looks like a return to Alien being horrifying. This is Evil Dead (2013) for the Alien series. Mean spirited, gross, and shocking. People were covering their eyes." His comments encapsulate the reactions of those who experienced the preview, emphasizing the film's return to its horror origins.

Scene Descriptions

The footage introduced us to Rain Carradine, played by Cailee Spaeny, and her crew as they explore a mysterious abandoned spacecraft. The tension escalates when most of the crew finds themselves trapped in a flooded room with water up to their knees. Unbeknownst to them, they are in an incubation chamber housing numerous alien eggs containing facehugger creatures. During a critical moment, the crew's android, Andy (portrayed by David Jonsson), malfunctions and restarts, inadvertently triggering the eggs and releasing the facehuggers into the water.

As the crew fights for survival against a swarm of aliens, they utilize their firearms and work together to fend off the attackers. The practical effects used for the facehugger creatures enhance the palpable sense of danger. Eventually, Andy completes his reboot and assists the team in their escape.

In a gripping sequence, Spaeny's character manages to open one of the doors from the outside, but only for a brief moment. A tense shot follows, showcasing dozens of facehuggers pursuing the crew down a narrow, claustrophobic corridor, creating a frantic race for survival. Just as the door closes, one facehugger slips through and attacks a crew member.

The tension escalates further in a subsequent scene where the attacked woman begins to feel severe pain in her chest, indicating that an alien is about to emerge. The situation intensifies as she uses an X-ray flashlight, revealing a small chestburster attempting to break free from her body. As the alien makes its exit, it falls to the ground, causing chaos as the ship's co-pilot loses control, resulting in the spacecraft flying erratically while the chestburster emerges.

The film features an animatronic alien that is shown in stunning detail, aligning Alien: Romulus more closely with the original trilogy than with the more recent prequels. The presentation concludes with a montage that gives viewers a first look at an adult xenomorph, which appears more like an actor in costume than an animatronic creation.

Directed by Fede Alvarez, known for La casa and Man in The Dark, Alien: Romulus is set to hit theaters on August 14. The storyline follows a group of young space colonizers who, while scavenging through the depths of an abandoned space station, encounter the universe's most terrifying life form.
