Matt Damon Almost Turned Down His Iconic Role in 'The Martian'

Currently starring in 'The Odyssey', Matt Damon revealed that he nearly declined one of his most significant roles over a decade ago, influenced by his experience with Christopher Nolan.

In 2015, Damon took on the lead role in the science fiction film 'The Martian', directed by Ridley Scott. The film tells the gripping story of Mark Watney, an astronaut who is mistakenly presumed dead after a violent storm on Mars.

Damon recounted, "I had just finished filming Interstellar_"_, referring to his brief yet pivotal role in Nolan's film. He expressed his concerns, saying he felt he couldn't play another character lost on a planet. He confided in director Ridley Scott about his intention to turn down the part due to these feelings.

Scott's response was straightforward and impactful: "Oh, everyone will forget!" This simple reassurance convinced Damon to accept the role. "I said, 'Okay, I’ll do the movie,'" he recalled. "It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. It was a fantastic role with Ridley, and I had a really great time doing it."
