Sylvester Stallone Reflects on Directing 'Rocky 2' Amid Industry Hesitation

In a recent interview, Sylvester Stallone revisited the journey of directing "Rocky 2," a significant milestone in his cinematic career. The action star revealed that there was a notable reluctance among filmmakers to take on the project, which ultimately led him to step behind the camera himself.

The excitement surrounding the franchise has been reignited with the release of the first trailer for the upcoming biopic "I Play Rocky." The film has garnered a positive response from fans, particularly praising lead actor Anthony Ippolito for his authentic portrayal of a young Stallone. At just 26 years old, Ippolito not only bears a striking resemblance to the young actor but has also captured his mannerisms and vocal style.

Directed by Peter Farrelly, known for "Green Book: A Special Friendship," the biopic chronicles Stallone's challenging journey to fame with his iconic film "Rocky." It tells a true Hollywood story, as Stallone had to write the role of Robert "Rocky" Balboa for himself to showcase his talent.

However, Stallone's challenges did not end with the original "Rocky." Following the success of the first film, the pressure to deliver a successful sequel loomed large. After the phenomenal reception of "Rocky," Stallone faced significant expectations in Hollywood.

The immediate follow-up, "F.I.S.T. – A Man Goes His Way," did not meet box office expectations, and Stallone's directorial debut, "Vorhof zum Paradies," was a commercial failure, too closely mirroring the Rocky narrative.

MGM was eager to dive into "Rocky 2," but director John G. Avildsen was unavailable, as he was busy preparing for his next hit, "Saturday Night Fever," which would launch John Travolta’s career. Ironically, just before filming began, Avildsen was replaced by veteran director John Badham.

Stallone recounted on the "Inspire Me" podcast, hosted by entrepreneur Stephen Olexy, that the reluctance to direct was widespread:

"In the end, I had to take on the directing role; not because I wanted to, but because no one else wanted to."

Initially, the studio opposed Stallone directing due to the unfavorable reviews of "Vorhof zur Hölle." However, producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff recognized Stallone’s determination and ultimately granted him the role:

"They asked, 'What do you think?' I replied, 'I want to take the chance, sure.' […] That’s why 'Rocky' and 'Rocky 2' have such a similar style; I wanted them to flow into each other."

The outcome of Stallone's directorial effort was a resounding success. "Rocky 2" grossed an impressive $200 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 1979, trailing only behind "James Bond 007 – Moonraker – Streng geheim," and solidified Stallone's status as a leading star in Hollywood.
