Box Office Update: Vaiana Disappoints in Live-Action Remake
Vaiana disappoints at the box office, while other films like Evil Dead Burn and Toy Story 5 perform moderately well.

The latest live-action adaptation from Disney, Vaiana, has opened to disappointing numbers, particularly after the success of its animated sequel. With a hefty budget of $250 million, the film has managed to garner only $42 million in its opening weekend in the United States, falling short by about $15 million compared to the original animated feature. This performance aligns closely with the recent controversial release of Snow White.

Despite Disney's previous announcement to halt live-action remakes, the unexpected success of Lilo & Stitch may have prompted a reconsideration of this strategy. Upcoming releases still include Rapunzel, directed by Michael Gracey, which could potentially influence the studio's direction moving forward. On a global scale, Vaiana has accumulated $95 million, yet this figure still falls short of expectations.
In contrast, another new release, Evil Dead Burn, directed by Sébastien Vanicek, has received a warm reception from YouTube influencers for its graphic violence and gore. It opened with $13 million in the U.S. and a total of $40 million worldwide, which, while decent, is perceived as somewhat underwhelming.
Meanwhile, Des Minions et des monstres has seen a slight recovery, bringing in $108 million in the U.S. and $280 million globally, though this remains the lowest score in the franchise. Disclosure Day continues to hold strong with $228 million worldwide and $111 million domestically, marking it as one of Spielberg's recent high performers. On the other hand, Supergirl is struggling, with total earnings of $115 million and just $66 million in the U.S., raising questions about the future of DC Studios.
Finally, Toy Story 5 is approaching the $880 million mark globally. Young Washington, despite a significant drop, has accumulated $33 million, while Olivia Wilde's latest film, The Invite, opened with a promising $7 million.
Looking ahead, the upcoming weekend is set to feature L'Odyssée, with Universal and Hollywood hoping for a significant box office success.
