Disappointing Box Office for Disney's 'Vaiana' and 'Evil Dead Burn'
Disney's 'Vaiana' and 'Evil Dead Burn' underperform at the box office, with audience ratings showing mixed reactions despite disappointing earnings.

This past weekend marked a disappointing chapter for major film releases in the United States, with both Disney's live-action adaptation of "Vaiana" and the horror flick "Evil Dead Burn" falling short of expectations.
Disney's highly anticipated live-action remake of "Vaiana" grossed only $43 million, significantly lower than the projected $60 to $75 million. Globally, the film has accumulated around $95 million, which is underwhelming considering its production budget of approximately $250 million.
Historically, the family adventure genre might have expected a stronger box office performance. Dwayne Johnson, who stars in the film, was once a box office draw with hits like the "Jumanji" series and his own "Fast & Furious" spin-off, "Hobbs & Shaw." However, the timing of this release may have contributed to its lackluster performance, as the original animated film premiered a decade ago. The sequel, "Vaiana 2," is set to hit theaters in 2024, and a third installment has already been confirmed, suggesting that audiences might feel it’s too soon for a live-action reimagining.
Families may also be experiencing budget constraints after recent releases like "Toy Story 5" and "Minions & Monsters," impacting their ability to spend on new films.
Similarly, "Evil Dead Burn" failed to attract audiences, earning just $14 million, which is a stark contrast to the $24 million opening of its predecessor, "Evil Dead Rise." The film's total worldwide earnings stand at $27 million.
Despite the disappointing box office figures, audience reception for both films has been relatively positive. "Vaiana" currently boasts a CinemaScore of A- and an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, "Evil Dead Burn" has a CinemaScore of B and an audience rating of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Whether "Vaiana" can reach the heights of its animated counterpart, which grossed nearly $1 billion, remains uncertain. Disney may also be banking on streaming audiences, as "Vaiana" ranks among its top franchises alongside "Lilo & Stitch," benefiting from high rewatch potential.
As word-of-mouth becomes increasingly vital for box office success, films like "Obsession – Du sollst mich lieben" have shown that positive reception can lead to improved earnings over time. It remains to be seen if "Vaiana" and "Evil Dead Burn" can gain traction in the coming weeks.
