Disappointment at the Box Office: Disney's 'Vaiana' and 'Evil Dead Burn' Struggle
Disney's 'Vaiana' and 'Evil Dead Burn' have both faced disappointing box office results, with the former grossing only $43 million against a $250 million budget.

The latest box office results reveal a disheartening weekend for new releases in the United States, with Disney's much-anticipated live-action remake of "Vaiana" falling short of expectations. The film managed to gross only $43 million during its opening weekend, a stark contrast to the projected figures of $60 to $75 million. Globally, it has accumulated about $95 million, which is particularly disappointing given its production budget of approximately $250 million.

In a different era, this family adventure might have been a guaranteed hit. Dwayne Johnson, the film's star, has previously enjoyed significant box office success with franchises like "Jumanji" and his own spin-off from the "Fast & Furious" series, "Hobbs & Shaw." However, Johnson's involvement as the original voice in the animated version of "Vaiana" may not be enough to save this live-action iteration from its underwhelming performance. Additionally, the original film was released just ten years ago, making it arguably too soon for a remake.
The recent release of "Vaiana 2" in 2024 and the confirmation of a third installment could also indicate that audiences are not yet ready for a live-action version. Families might be feeling the pinch on their cinema budgets after recent releases like "Toy Story 5" and "Minions & Monsters," further impacting ticket sales.
The disappointment extends beyond Disney, as the horror film "Evil Dead Burn" has also struggled to attract viewers. With only $14 million in its opening weekend, it has significantly underperformed compared to its predecessor, "Evil Dead Rise," which opened to $24 million. The current worldwide total stands at $27 million, indicating a tough road ahead for this installment of the cult classic series.
Despite these setbacks, there is a glimmer of hope as audience reactions have been relatively positive. "Vaiana" has received an A- Cinema Score and boasts an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, "Evil Dead Burn" has earned a Cinema Score of B and an audience rating of 81% on the same platform. This positive reception suggests that word-of-mouth could play a crucial role in boosting their box office performance in the coming weeks.
As the landscape of cinema continues to evolve, the importance of audience feedback is becoming increasingly vital for films seeking longevity in theaters. The horror hit "Obsession – Du sollst mich lieben" has demonstrated that positive word-of-mouth can lead to increased earnings week after week. It remains to be seen if "Vaiana" and "Evil Dead Burn" can gain momentum and improve their standings at the box office.
