Matthias Sammer Critiques Treatment of Julian Nagelsmann: A National Deficit

Matthias Sammer, a prominent figure in German football, voiced strong criticism regarding the treatment of former national team coach Julian Nagelsmann following Germany's exit from the World Cup. Speaking at the International Coaches Congress in Mainz, Sammer expressed his discontent with the public's harsh response to Nagelsmann after the team's disappointing performance.

While acknowledging that he had previously offered critical insights about Nagelsmann’s coaching—stating, "Some things were good, and some were less good"—Sammer firmly believes the treatment of Nagelsmann was unjust. He emphasized that the way the coach was handled post-tournament reflects a significant deficit in the nation's approach to its football leaders.

Sammer elaborated on the challenges faced in the development of German football, asserting that there needs to be a shift in priorities. He stated, "The A-grade must again be more important than the B-grade," referring to the need for results to take precedence over the style of play.

He pointed out a fundamental dilemma within the German football system, where coaches bear too much responsibility. To address this issue, he proposed that a specific qualification for sporting directors should be considered, aiming to alleviate some of the burdens on coaches.
