FIFA Launches Investigation Following Controversial World Cup Final

In the wake of the tumultuous events that unfolded after the World Cup final, FIFA has requested statements from all parties involved, including Argentine player Leandro Paredes. The football governing body has indicated that it will announce its decisions following this inquiry, which has been prompted by the appointment of a special investigator.

The final match, which saw Spain triumph 1-0 after extra time in East Rutherford, was marred by intense confrontations, primarily instigated by the Argentine side. Paredes became embroiled in a physical altercation post-match, where he was seen grabbing Spain's Gavi by the shirt, striking him in the face, and pushing him to the ground. Prior to this incident, he had also shoved Eric Garcia. According to FIFA, Gavi is the only Spanish player currently under investigation, while several Argentine players, including Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, are also facing scrutiny.

FIFA's investigation extends beyond individual player conduct to potential violations of disciplinary regulations by the Argentine Football Association. This includes concerns over political messages being displayed at sporting events, a matter that has raised significant controversy.

Following Argentina's semi-final victory over England, players displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Falkland Islands are Argentine") on the pitch. This gesture referenced the armed conflict between the United Kingdom and Argentina over the disputed islands in the South Atlantic in 1982. In response, the British government has called for an investigation by FIFA.

Moreover, FIFA is looking into allegations of discriminatory and racist incidents, delayed kick-offs, and inappropriate messages associated with the Argentine team. The investigation will also cover instances of fans throwing objects during matches.
