After a Rough Start in Theaters, Sci-Fi Hit "Masters of the Universe" Now Streaming on Amazon
Fans can now stream the sci-fi film "Masters of the Universe" on Prime Video, following its box office struggles. Director Travis Knight's homage to the classic cartoon is available for viewing.
Just seven weeks following its theatrical release, fans can now enjoy the entertaining sci-fi adventure "Masters of the Universe" on Prime Video at no extra cost.
Despite the film's release in cinemas, the latest adaptation of "Masters of the Universe," which arrives 39 years after Dolph Lundgren's portrayal of He-Man, struggled at the box office. However, the reasons for its lackluster performance are not due to a chaotic or overly dark direction. Instead, director Travis Knight's version is a heartfelt tribute filled with nostalgic moments, Easter eggs, and the same humorous charm that characterized the iconic Filmation cartoon that inspired it.
Audience reception has been notably positive, with Rotten Tomatoes showing an audience score of 86%, significantly higher than the critics' score of 67%. Nevertheless, the film's overall box office earnings totaled only $113 million against a hefty production budget of $200 million, marking it as a substantial financial disappointment.
Given its production by Amazon MGM Studios, many anticipated that "Masters of the Universe" would make its way to streaming soon after its theatrical run. This expectation has been realized, as the film will be available for streaming on Amazon starting July 22, 2026.

Streaming Plans and Theatrical Release
There was a time when audiences had to wait up to a year to rent a film on video after its theatrical release. Over the years, this window shrank to about six months. Nowadays, films that underperform at the box office often find their way to streaming platforms almost immediately.
Interestingly, Amazon may have hinted at its streaming plans for "Masters of the Universe" prior to the film's release. In France, the film did not receive a theatrical debut due to regulations that require a 17-month wait before films can be offered digitally. By not releasing the film in theaters there, Amazon avoided the risk of increased illegal piracy.
This decision was interpreted by fans as a clear signal that a quick streaming release was forthcoming, almost creating a self-fulfilling prophecy regarding the film's availability on platforms like Prime Video.
