Dolph Lundgren Reflects on Disappointment Over 'Masters of the Universe' Box Office Failure
Dolph Lundgren expresses disappointment over the poor box office performance of the new 'Masters of the Universe' film, reflecting on the legacy of the original 1987 movie.

Dolph Lundgren, who famously portrayed He-Man in the 1987 film "Masters of the Universe," has expressed his disappointment regarding the recent live-action reboot's poor performance at the box office. Speaking candidly about the film, Lundgren admitted he felt "somewhat disappointed" by the outcome.
The original 1987 adaptation of "Masters of the Universe" struggled at the box office, partly due to its darker tone, altered costumes, and a budget that did not align with audience expectations. However, the film eventually gained a cult following through VHS releases and television broadcasts, solidifying its place in pop culture history.
After years of development, the new live-action version was released under the direction of Travis Knight, known for his work on "Bumblebee." This latest iteration aimed to stay true to the vibrant and humorous essence of the original 1980s cartoon, a direction fans had long desired. Despite these efforts, the film, featuring Nicholas Galitzine, once again fell short at the box office, echoing the fate of its predecessor nearly 40 years ago.

The reboot managed to generate only about $105 million globally, a disappointing figure compared to its production costs, estimated between $170 million to $200 million. Lundgren, who discussed the film's fate with ComicBook.com, noted the extensive marketing and press coverage surrounding the release, which made the outcome even more perplexing for him:
"Yes, I am somewhat disappointed. I mean, everyone told me it would be great. I’m not a fan of looking at box office numbers and letting that influence my emotional stance on the film. But I thought, 'Oh, okay. Strange that it didn’t do better.' I don’t know what it is. There was plenty of marketing, a lot of press. I was involved, at least partially."
Despite the underwhelming box office results, director Travis Knight has expressed optimism about the future of the "Masters of the Universe" franchise.

With Amazon MGM Studios backing the film, the approach to its productions may differ from traditional Hollywood studios, similar to Apple’s strategy. This could open the door for a sequel if the film finds success on streaming platforms like Prime Video. However, as of now, no official plans for a sequel have been confirmed.
Fans remain hopeful, especially as the limited edition Steelbook release on Amazon sold out completely due to pre-orders. While the standard Blu-ray and 4K UHD versions are still available, Lundgren holds onto hope that this new adaptation may eventually attain the same cult status as the original film featuring him as He-Man.
