Addressing the Right Flank: Inter's Need for a Reliable Wingback
Inter must address their right flank issues, with Andy Diouf showing promise while the team still needs a reliable winger. Insights on potential signings and player performances are discussed.
Andy Diouf has the potential to become a standout player, drawing comparisons to legends like Garrincha or a blend of modern stars such as Dumfries, Hakimi, and Cancelo. His coach, Chivu, is right to consider him for the wingback role, as Diouf possesses unique attributes that are currently lacking in the squad. However, regardless of Diouf's development, Inter still requires a dedicated right winger.
If Diouf successfully transitions into this position, he could fill the void left by Luis Henrique, who was brought in last season with high hopes. The former Marseille player was expected to be a game-changer, capable of breaking down defenses and creating numerical advantages. Unfortunately, his inaugural season did not fully meet those expectations.
Luis Henrique has shown more strength defensively than offensively, which is unusual for someone introduced as a wide attacker in a 4-3-3 setup. At times, he appeared hesitant and overly cautious, focusing on meeting basic expectations rather than taking risks. While he could still have a breakout season, it’s important to note that he adequately replaced the injured Dumfries for several months. However, upon Dumfries' return, the difference in quality was evident.
Currently, Inter is missing a true right-sided winger—someone who can dominate the flank and contribute effectively in both attack and defense. Finding such a player is no easy task. The recent transfer of Palestra to London for a hefty fee illustrates the difficulty of acquiring top talent, while the situation surrounding Khalaili has been notably different. Spending excessively without conviction is unwise, but the need to address this gap is crucial, especially given the importance of wingbacks in a 3-5-2 formation.
In my opinion, a return of Perisic would be ideal, but that’s just my perspective. Even as we hope for Diouf and Luis Henrique to excel, having a reliable option is essential. We will have to wait and see how the situation unfolds.
On a different note, Stones is a defender who played a pivotal role in Manchester City's Champions League final victory over Inter, yet also struggled against Lautaro in the semi-final loss to Argentina. If he can maintain his form in 20-25 matches, he would be a remarkable signing for Inter. Meanwhile, Jones could make a significant impact in midfield, though some player departures are necessary before pursuing the Liverpool star.
It’s unfortunate that Marello is left-footed and seen as the successor to Dimarco. While he could potentially play on the right, it may not showcase his full capabilities. Imagining Dimarco on the opposite flank is tantalizing. Nevertheless, Marello has immense potential and could go far in his career. Speaking of young talents, this season is set to be pivotal for Pio, who is exceptionally talented and represents the future of both Inter and the national team.
