Zac Efron's Rejection Reshapes 'Barbarian': A Look Back
Zac Efron's refusal to star in 'Barbarian' led to significant changes in the character of AJ, ultimately resulting in Justin Long's acclaimed performance.

Zac Efron was initially slated to take on a pivotal role in the horror thriller Barbarian, but his decision to decline the offer led to significant changes in the film's character dynamics. This casting shift ultimately resulted in a performance that has been widely praised by audiences.

Before its release in 2022, Barbarian generated considerable buzz as one of the most anticipated horror films. Directed by Zach Cregger, the movie intrigued fans with its mysterious storyline and a cast that included Bill Skarsgård, Georgina Campbell, and Justin Long, who also made a cameo appearance in the film.
However, one of the film's most notable roles was not originally intended for Long. Cregger revealed in a 2022 interview with ScreenRant that he initially envisioned Zac Efron for the character of AJ. This character, introduced unexpectedly in the film's second act, plays a crucial role in the unfolding narrative. AJ, who is portrayed as a charming yet complex figure, owns the house where much of the story takes place.
The Original Choice: Zac Efron
Cregger explained that his initial choice for AJ was heavily influenced by the physical image he had in mind for the role. He described the character as a “good-looking simpleton” (via WhatCulture), a description that he felt fit Efron perfectly. However, after Efron turned down the role, Cregger took the opportunity to reevaluate his conception of AJ.
“When he declined, I had time to think. We made a list of who could replace him, and I just realized that I had been mistaken about the idea I had for the role… Not as big – more of an Alpha male – but more of a guy like Tom Hanks. And then I thought: ‘Who is Tom Hanks? Justin Long is Tom Hanks. Let’s do that.’ That’s how it happened,” Cregger shared.

A Transformative Casting Decision
This new perspective led Cregger to adopt a markedly different approach to casting. He believed that Justin Long’s endearing and disarming presence would heighten the impact of AJ’s character revelations throughout the film.
Reflecting on the outcome, it’s hard to argue against Cregger’s decision. Long’s portrayal has become one of the standout elements of Barbarian, making it difficult to imagine anyone else in the role. While Efron might have brought a different energy to AJ, Long's interpretation adds an ambiguity that enhances the character's overall impact.

A Horror Narrative Unfolds
Barbarian begins with the character Tess, played by Georgina Campbell, who arrives in Detroit for a job interview. She rents a home for the night, only to find that it is already occupied due to a booking error.
Despite her initial hesitations, Tess agrees to share the space with the other tenant. However, what starts as a simple mix-up quickly spirals into a nightmare, as she faces increasingly perilous situations that threaten her life.
Currently, Barbarian is available on VOD.
