The UEFA member associations have issued a stark warning about a potential boycott of the World Cup if FIFA proceeds with its planned investor deal. This move has garnered support from another continental federation opposing the initiative.
Infantino Calls It a Unique Opportunity
The concerns extend beyond just the men's World Cup scheduled for 2030; they also encompass the upcoming Women's World Cup set to take place next summer in Brazil.
The looming boycott could significantly undermine FIFA President Gianni Infantino's plans, as potential investors are unlikely to commit funds to a tournament that lacks participation from European teams.
FIFA had announced its intentions to generate billions through the potential sale of a portion of its commercial rights related to the World Cup. Reports indicate that the governing body set a deadline for the approval of the proposed investor deal, offering a special payment in return. The deadline for the 211 associations to agree to this plan is reportedly September 19.
"We must not lose the acceptance of the fans, but we are on the verge of destroying this acceptance. I find that extremely problematic and unacceptable," stated the DFB president in an interview with ZDF.
