After a wait spanning 36 years, Tom Cruise is making significant strides with the sequel to his 1990 racing film, "Days of Thunder." The project has recently secured a director, Jonathan Levine, known for his work on "Warm Bodies," marking a pivotal moment in its development.
Cruise's journey in the action genre began with the iconic "Top Gun," which not only solidified his status as a leading man in Hollywood but also showcased his talent at just 23 years old. Following his extensive work as IMF agent Ethan Hunt in the "Mission: Impossible" series, Cruise is now turning his attention back to projects he has long set aside.
The original "Days of Thunder," directed by Tony Scott and produced by the same duo behind "Top Gun," Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, was a notable box office success. "My absolute favorite is definitely 'Days of Thunder.' Yes, yes, you all laugh, but seriously, I’m a huge fan. For me, 'Days of Thunder' should have been what 'Grand Prix' and 'Le Mans' were. Sure, it had a huge budget, big stars, and a great director in Tony Scott, but it had the charm of earlier films from American International Pictures. I don’t think something like that works if you take it too seriously."
Currently, details regarding the plot of the sequel remain under wraps, but it is plausible that Cruise's character, the once hot-headed racer Cole Trickle, may return as a team owner or chief mechanic, guiding a new generation of racers toward breaking records on the track.
