The role of Chandler Bing in the beloved sitcom Friends is indelibly linked to Matthew Perry, but the casting journey could have taken a very different turn. Craig Bierko, an actor who was once considered for the role, has openly discussed the ramifications of his decision to decline it, which led to Perry's rise to fame.
From the outset, the creators of Friends—Marta Kauffman, David Crane, and Kevin S. Bright—had a clear vision for who they wanted to portray Chandler. Their top choice was Matthew Perry, but a significant obstacle stood in their way: he was already committed to another project, a science fiction series, making his involvement seem unlikely.
A New Contender Enters the Fray
Faced with the prospect of losing their ideal candidate, the producers turned to Craig Bierko, who would later gain recognition for his role in the series UnREAL. This choice was not arbitrary; Perry himself had recommended Bierko, believing in his comedic talent from their time together on the show Sydney.
However, as the creators later recounted to Première (via Purebreak), they ended up selecting Bierko “a bit by default, even though he’s a great actor.” Ultimately, Bierko chose to decline the offer in favor of another project he found more promising.
A Lost Audition and a Twist of Fate
Bierko’s decision forced the Friends team to resume their search for Chandler. The subsequent auditions did not yield satisfactory results, and one promising candidate's audition tape was lost in customs.
Fortune smiled on Matthew Perry when the science fiction series he was involved with was canceled, freeing him up to audition for Chandler. His audition quickly assuaged any lingering doubts among the producers. David Crane remarked, “You can’t imagine the relief we felt: the lines were finally funny coming out of his mouth.”

The Personal Cost of Success
While this casting decision solidified Friends’ legacy, it had a more complicated impact on Craig Bierko. In a 2023 interview with Policy & Politics, Matthew Perry revealed that Bierko struggled to come to terms with his friend's newfound success stemming from a role he had turned down. Perry recounted how Bierko eventually apologized, expressing his difficulty in coping with Perry's rise to fame and fortune.
“He apologized and told me he couldn’t handle the fact that I was becoming rich and popular because of a role he had refused,” Perry shared.
This paradox highlights a unique aspect of Friends: while it forged connections among millions of viewers, it also strained a friendship in its wake.
