German U18 Handball Team Crowned European Champions

The German U18 handball team has secured the title of European champions, delivering a commanding performance against Slovenia in the final held in Belgrade. Under the guidance of head coach Erik Wudtke, the team triumphed with a score of 36:27, leading 17:11 at halftime, thus adding another gold medal to the German Handball Federation's (DHB) collection in youth competitions.

Among the standout players in this victorious squad are Elvis Kretzschmar, the son of handball legend Stefan Kretzschmar, and Kalle Gaugisch, son of women's national team coach Markus Gaugisch. Earlier in the tournament, the German U18 team had faced a narrow defeat against Slovenia during the main round.

This latest victory continues the remarkable success streak for the DHB at the youth level. Just earlier this month, the U20 women’s team claimed the world championship title, while the U19 team had already secured the European championship title the previous year. Additionally, both the U17 and U19 men's teams captured the world titles last year.

A Thrilling Journey to Victory

The match began with Germany showing signs of nerves, falling behind 5:8 after a series of missed shots. However, the team's aggressive defense soon began to trouble the Slovenian side, forcing multiple turnovers and allowing Germany to take control with a score of 15:11. In the stands, Stefan Kretzschmar celebrated, having made a special trip from Germany to witness the final.

Following halftime, Slovenia struggled to keep pace, making numerous unforced errors. German goalkeeper Tobias Dengler played a crucial role in the team's success, making impressive saves that helped Germany extend their lead to 20:11. At one point, the team went over ten minutes without conceding a goal, effectively sealing the match early on.
