Demi Vollering Takes Command at Tour de France Femmes

Demi Vollering has positioned herself as the frontrunner in the Tour de France Femmes, securing a crucial victory on the penultimate stage.

On Saturday, Vollering's performance was nothing short of spectacular, as she clinched the win and donned the yellow jersey ahead of the final day of competition. "I knew we could do it, but it really hurt. We somehow managed, and this shows that if you believe in something and think big, you can achieve it with good people by your side," Vollering expressed. "The last stage will be tough, and anything can happen. But it’s already a dream come true to go into the last day in the yellow jersey. I will do everything to keep it."

Challenging Profile on the Penultimate Stage

The organizers designed a tricky course for the eighth stage, featuring four category four climbs and officially classified as a flat stage. At first glance, it seemed like Lorena Wiebes might have a chance to reclaim her winning form after her two victories at the start of the Tour. However, the 171.9 kilometers from Sisteron to Nice quickly turned into a test of strength for the yellow jersey contenders.

After the mountain points were awarded, the route included a steep ascent just a few kilometers from the finish. This final climb, spanning approximately 600 meters, boasted an incline of up to 18 percent. Elisa Balsamo, who finished second on day two, remarked, "I studied the stage closely and think the last climb is incredibly difficult and extremely steep. I don't believe there will be a mass sprint."

Squiban and Adegeest's Bold Breakaway

Balsamo’s prediction held true as the steep terrain separated the competitors. Maeva Squiban and Loes Adegeest attempted a breakaway, which lasted until about ten kilometers from the finish—the longest of the Tour. With 35 kilometers remaining, their lead had dwindled to four minutes, but as the main field increased the pace, their chances faded.

Squiban faced a setback when she crashed during the descent after the Cote de Colomars, forcing her to finish with an injury to her left arm. Adegeest was left with little hope as Franziska Koch surged ahead in the subsequent Cote de la Ginestiere, setting the stage for Vollering's assault on the yellow jersey. Koch’s efforts fractured the field and quickly erased a 50-second deficit to the leader.

Vollering's Spectacle in the Final Stretch

As Vollering approached the ramp, she was closely followed by Elisa Longo Borghini and the overall leader Katarzyna Niewiadoma, while the rest of the riders fell behind. In the final meters, both Niewiadoma and Longo Borghini could not keep pace with Vollering, who surged ahead alone over the crest with just a slight lead.

With more energy left on the flat terrain, Vollering extended her advantage to not only take the stage victory but also secure the yellow jersey. Starting the penultimate stage with a 15-second deficit, she crossed the finish line with a 17-second lead, earning a time bonus of ten seconds, while Niewiadoma, finishing third, received just four seconds. Vollering now leads Niewiadoma by eight seconds as they head into the final stage.

Antonia Niedermaier managed to defend her white jersey, finishing strongly in eleventh place with a 38-second gap behind Vollering. Team Canyon/SRAM's director Rolf Aldag commented, "Demi was incredibly strong and dropped everyone. The last climb was ten meters too long. Tomorrow is a new day, and nothing is lost. It would be crazy not to try. Kasia will leave no stone unturned to win the Tour."

Showdown in Nice

The excitement of the Tour de France Femmes continues as the final stage promises to be a true test of endurance. The 99.2 kilometers through Nice will feature approximately 2,100 meters of elevation gain across three category two climbs and one category one climb. To win the Tour, competitors will need to ascend into the yellow jersey.
