Klopp Addresses Press Conference Misstep and El-Mala Speculation

Jürgen Klopp, in his inaugural press conference as the new head coach of the German national team, acknowledged a misstep regarding his comments that led to significant media scrutiny. He firmly denied any involvement in the ongoing speculation surrounding player El-Mala.

Reflecting on his earlier remarks, Klopp stated, "I didn’t really like that I allowed certain statements to become the headline of media criticism." During a video interview with dfb.tv, he emphasized that this was a mistake on his part, gesturing with his fingers to indicate quotation marks around the term "media criticism."

At his introduction on July 24, Klopp had made a bold statement directed at the media, saying, "The day you no longer want me, just say it, and I’m gone. Without a severance package. If you say tomorrow that I’m terrible, I will leave." He further added, "If you misbehave and don’t leave my family alone, I will also be out of here." Klopp expressed his willingness to address any sporting criticisms but highlighted his expectations for respectful treatment.

Concern Over Media Treatment

In his recent comments, Klopp elaborated on his previous statements, explaining that he aimed to clarify his position. He recounted his experience after leaving Liverpool in 2024, where he felt the English tabloid press descended upon him and his family "like flies on honey." He conveyed that he wanted to ensure such treatment would not occur again.

Despite the challenges, Klopp expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating, "I have a real desire for this task." The former coach of Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund noted that if the public sentiment turned against him, he would reconsider his position, saying, "I don’t have to force myself into this."

Clarifying His Role

Klopp also expressed his displeasure at the notion that his first action would be to contact a player regarding a potential transfer, stating, "It offends me a bit that people think my first act would be to call a player and say, 'By the way, BVB, this would suit you well.' I certainly did not do that; that is not my job. I haven’t even started working with the players yet."

Positive Reception at DFB

As he settles into his new position, Klopp reported feeling warmly welcomed. He acknowledged that he quickly recognized the presence of "really good people" within the federation. Given the disappointing outcome of the last World Cup, he noted that he would not need to start from scratch, expressing optimism and excitement about the work ahead.

Klopp has begun reaching out to Bundesliga coaches to establish collaborative relationships, particularly concerning player workload management. However, he has yet to make contact with the national team players, citing their current focus on preparation. He plans to engage with them soon, taking the necessary time to understand them beyond just their on-field personas.

Looking ahead, Klopp intends to attend the upcoming Supercup match between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and will be present at several initial Bundesliga games. His debut in the Nations League is scheduled for September 24 in the Netherlands, followed by matches against Greece on September 27 and October 4, and Serbia on October 1.
