Since 2017, Michel Muller has almost disappeared from screens. What has become of the actor, director, and comedian known for Fallait pas l'inviter, Wasabi, and La Vie de Michel Muller est plus belle que la vôtre?

In 2001, Wasabi surprised audiences by attracting 1.2 million viewers! The comedy directed by Gérard Krawczyk features a memorable duo, Jean Reno and Michel Muller, a cult comedian from the 90s and 2000s. A key figure in the French humor landscape at that time, Michel Muller gradually distanced himself from screens until he disappeared from the media scene in 2017.
A Provocative and Endearing Comedian
What has become of the one who first honed his craft as a comedian before gaining fame on Canal+? Before embarking on an artistic career, Michel Muller taught mathematics. He then made a radical shift by entering the advertising world while performing numerous one-man shows on Parisian stages.
His dark and offbeat humor quickly captivated audiences. In 1998, he landed his first film role in La Voie est libre and gradually established himself as a figure in the comedic genre. Michel Muller then continued to take on roles in various styles of comedies. He appeared in popular comedies like Recto verso, Astérix et Obélix contre César, and Les Dalton, as well as in works blending humor and suspense, such as Comme un poisson hors de l'eau.
The artist also shined in action comedies like Taxi 2 and Wasabi, where he secured his first major role alongside Jean Reno. However, the actor did not limit himself to the comedic genre. Throughout his career, he explored other realms, from dramatic comedy with Train de vie to horror films like Promenons-nous dans les bois, and even swashbuckler films with Fanfan la Tulipe.

From Actor to Director
In 2005, he took a new step by creating and directing La Vie de Michel Muller est plus belle que la vôtre, a satirical comedy where he amusingly stages his own life as an artist. Unfortunately, the work was a total commercial failure, with only 4,500 admissions in France.
Alongside his directing activities, he continued his acting career and made multiple screen appearances, notably in La Grande Vie and Les Petits Meurtres d'Agatha Christie. He also joined the cast of the historical series The Borgias, where he portrayed King Charles VIII.
In 2012, Michel Muller returned to directing with the theatrical release of Hénaut Président, an adaptation of his own series. The feature film was released a month before the first round of the French presidential election but failed to attract an audience, gathering only 4,700 viewers, marking a monumental flop.
Distributed in about fifty theaters, it therefore attracted a very limited number of spectators. This commercial failure marked a halt in the career of the director and comedian, despite a relatively modest budget estimated between 850,000 and 1.5 million euros.
End of Career?
In 2016, Michel Muller joined the political series Baron noir, where he portrayed Gérard Balleroy, an ambitious and unscrupulous character. However, his storyline concluded at the end of the first season. Subsequently, the actor made only brief appearances in films, playing a police officer in Jour J and a psychologist in La Fête est finie, both released in 2017.
Since then, he has distanced himself from screens and media. When interviewed by Télé Star in 2019, his agent did not wish to comment on any potential projects for the artist. Very discreet and absent from social media, Michel Muller, now 59, maintains a certain reserve.
For now, Michel Muller remains one of those figures in French cinema and humor who have voluntarily distanced themselves from the spotlight without officially announcing their retirement.
His admirers still hope to see him return in a new project that would allow a new generation to discover his unique universe. In the meantime, his filmography and performances offer a vast field for catching up, notably his three one-man shows that have become cult classics for many fans.
