Tour de France Femmes: Lorena Wiebes Dominates Again

Lorena Wiebes showcased her sprinting prowess once again on Sunday, clinching victory in the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes, which spanned from Aigle to Geneva.

The race, marked by a sluggish pace due to the heat, set the stage perfectly for the Dutch cyclist. Wiebes powered through in the final meters, securing her position in the yellow jersey. She was followed by Elisa Balsamo and Marianne Vos, who rounded out the podium.

Riedmann Finishes in the Top Ten

German cyclist Linda Riedmann managed to break into the top ten, finishing in tenth place. "It feels good. It was a hectic finale, but in the end, the gap opened up, and I'm very happy with the tenth place. I had no teammates left and had to find my own way," the 23-year-old shared in an interview with Sportschau.

Liane Lippert and her Movistar teammate Marlen Reusser from Switzerland also finished without any issues. "I had good legs. We worked hard, but it paid off; we arrived safely. It was a good day, and I’m very satisfied with the race because we didn’t lose any time," Lippert commented.

Wiebes Wins with a Significant Lead

During the 147.9 kilometers to Geneva, it became apparent early on that a mass sprint for the stage victory would be the likely outcome. Although a five-rider breakaway formed on the undulating course, their lead never grew large enough to pose a real threat. Even Rejanne Markus, who attempted a solo break on the last of five climbs, could not change the outcome.

The main peloton, led by the perennial winner Wiebes, allowed the Lidl-Trek rider to build a lead of no more than a minute, ensuring they remained within striking distance. The peloton decided when to reel in the breakaway, which happened just 500 meters from the finish line, allowing Wiebes to cross first once again.

This victory marked Wiebes' fifth consecutive win and her seventh in the last eight races. In total, the 27-year-old has celebrated 16 victories this year, proving once again that she is unbeatable in the sprint finish. "The whole team worked hard for this. Rejanne held on for a long time at the front. I knew it was up to me, and fortunately, I found the right wheels to follow," Wiebes stated.

Will Wiebes Continue Her Winning Streak?

Wiebes might extend her remarkable streak on Monday, as the stage begins with a challenging first-category climb up the Col de la Faucille. However, the remainder of the 156.5 kilometers from Geneva to Poligny is significantly flatter. If a breakaway group cannot gain a significant advantage over the nearly 2,500 meters of elevation, Wiebes could celebrate a stage triple.

The following day will shift the focus to the overall competition, as contenders for the yellow jersey will face a 21-kilometer time trial, marking the first time they will be in the spotlight. The highlight of this year’s Tour de France Femmes will be the mountain finish at Mont Ventoux on Friday.
