Tom Welling's Journey After 'Smallville': A Dive into His Life 15 Years Later

Tom Welling, known for his iconic portrayal of Clark Kent in the beloved series "Smallville," has embarked on a significant transformation since the show concluded 15 years ago.

Welling, who was selected from a pool of thousands of candidates, brought a youthful charm and athleticism to the role of the future Superman. In a candid interview with Teen Mag, he recounted the moment he learned he had secured the role, recalling a pivotal phone call from his manager:

"I was driving away from the Warner Bros studio, stopped at a gas station to call my manager and tell him about my auditions. He picks up and says, 'Can you hold on for a minute?' The only thing I remember after that is seven people joining the call on the other line, almost in unison: 'You got the part, Tom!'"

Welling portrayed the character of Clark Kent for an impressive 10 seasons, spanning 217 episodes from 2001 to 2011. The series concluded for various reasons, leaving fans to wonder about the trajectory of Welling's career post-"Smallville."

Life After 'Smallville'

The WB

Following the end of "Smallville," Welling took on various roles, including that of Roy Kellerman, a secret service agent in the 2013 film "Parkland" directed by Peter Landesman. He also appeared in "Draft Day" (2014) and "The Choice" (2016). In 2017, he returned to television, taking on the role of the main antagonist in the third season of "Lucifer," where he was initially contracted for 10 episodes but opted for 15 due to his enthusiasm for the show.

In a surprising turn of events, Welling made headlines earlier this year when it was revealed by People that he had made a dramatic lifestyle change in 2020, becoming a horse rancher in a small Californian town, far removed from the glitz of Los Angeles. This new chapter has seen him step back from the limelight, with only a few film appearances, such as "Clear Cut" and "Chasing Summer," along with a cameo as Clark Kent in "Batwoman."

Despite his shift away from acting, Welling maintains a fond connection to "Smallville." He often revisits the series by watching episodes with Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor, on their podcast "TalkVille." His enduring bond with the character and the show remains strong, proving that for Welling, being Superman is a lasting legacy.
