The Best Blockbuster of the Summer! "Perfect in Every Way": Here Are the First Enthusiastic Reviews of Supergirl!

A year after "Superman," it's his cousin who takes over to continue the rise of the DC Universe: "Supergirl" is hitting our theaters, and here are the first reviews from the Anglo-Saxon press.

This is neither a bird, nor a plane, nor even Superman, but... his cousin. Joyfully seen tipsy in the reboot of the adventures of the Man of Steel in July 2025, Supergirl is getting ready to fly solo. Still portrayed by Milly Alcock, the revelation from House of the Dragon, in a feature film directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella), inspired by the excellent comic book "Woman of Tomorrow" and expected in our theaters in just under two weeks.
While Superman kept his feet on the ground, Supergirl takes us to the far reaches of the galaxy with a superheroine who seeks to find the antidote that will save her dog Krypto, poisoned by the terrible Krem from the Ochre Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), alongside the young Ruthye (Eve Ridley). An epic journey that will notably cross paths with the mercenary Lobo (Jason Momoa), in a film that had its premiere in London this Thursday, June 18.
And it is in this wake that Anglo-Saxon media have been able to share their opinions on the feature film, which will be released in our theaters on July 1.
#Supergirl is the best blockbuster of the summer! Terrific action but what sells it is the heart and the characters. Milly Alcock is a force to be reckoned with! Eve Ridley is also incredible & Jason Momoa is pitch perfect as Lobo. One of the best DC films! @supergirl pic.twitter.com/ENPIJFABOw

SUPERGIRL is not at all what I was expecting. I, too, assumed “superhero space movie with needle drops” would have a similar tone to GOTG or even Superman. Instead it looks and plays more like a Mad Max movie, with dirty worlds, gross villains and a self-destructive hero

#Supergirl is highly enjoyable.
It doesn't quite have the resonance of Superman, but it acts as both a perfect companion and follow-up to that movie with better characters and more complex relationships.
It's also incredibly emotional, which makes the action hit even harder. pic.twitter.com/Mic27Q2jKu

SUPERGIRL is everything I wanted it to be. Girls can be messy and that rules! Kara isn't her cousin and I really loved how this movie makes that clear. She's a different kind of hero and perfect in every way. pic.twitter.com/38V5fP2MWd

If you threw GOTG, True Grit, and Mad Max into a DC blender, you’d get #Supergirl - a grimy, funny, yet surprisingly somber space adventure. Milly shines, especially when we get into Kara’s tragic backstory, but Jason Momoa is having the fraggin’ time of his life as Lobo. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/k2wmb7VMdy

"I also want to highlight the practical effects. The sets, makeup, and puppetry are all Oscar-worthy. Krypton looks incredible. And God, this film confirms how perfect a choice David Corenswet is to play Superman. Every time he appears on screen, you can't help but smile."
#Supergirl channels the energy of Gunn’s SUPERMAN while carving out its own identity. Surprisingly dark themes, MAD MAX vibes, and a JOHN WICK-style motivation drive the story. Milly Alcock shines, and Jason Momoa brings his trademark chaotic charm. pic.twitter.com/OoExPgB8Yx

"Milly Alcock Will Change Your View of Supergirl Forever"
Supergirl is the superhero movie I've missed: a straightforward, poignant story with lots of emotion, especially when we see Kara through little Ruthye's eyes. Luckily that's every action scene. Milly Alcock absolutely owns the role and will change our idea of Supergirl forever. pic.twitter.com/LrdtV9ZCJX

#Supergirl isn't a classic but it's pacey fun and hits most of the targets it aims for. Milly Alcock is great as the titular heroine and Momoa's Lobo is a blast. Other big wins are the action, humor and when it leans into physical production. Production and costuming design are👍 pic.twitter.com/ogelX1QSCE

Supergirl starts off as a slow burn, but once it finds its footing, it soars. The film balances emotional character growth with truly epic action scenes, while Jason Momoa's Lobo steals the scenes he appears in. He was born to play this role."
"Some Adaptation Choices and a Lackluster Villain Keep It from Greatness"
Unfortunately Supergirl is a mixed bag for me. As a fan of the comic, I was (perhaps) overly excited for the film adaptation. While Jason Momoa’s Lobo & Milly Alcock shine, some adaptation choices and a bland villain keep it from greatness. It's, simply put, just fine. #Supergirl pic.twitter.com/4uDAvQmjYv
