Paul Walker's Near Miss with the Iconic Role of Anakin Skywalker

Before becoming a star in 'Fast & Furious', Paul Walker was a contender for the iconic role of Anakin Skywalker in 'Star Wars'. Explore his near-miss and the impact on his career.

Paul Walker's Near Miss with the Iconic Role of Anakin Skywalker

Before solidifying his status as an icon in the "Fast & Furious" franchise, Paul Walker was in the running for one of the most famous roles in science fiction: Anakin Skywalker in the "Star Wars" saga. Ultimately, the role went to Hayden Christensen, marking a significant turning point in both actors' careers.

Today, it's hard to envision anyone other than Hayden Christensen portraying Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi destined to become Darth Vader in the "Star Wars" prequels. However, during the early 2000s, George Lucas and his team explored numerous candidates before selecting the actor who would depict the tragic fall of the hero.

As fans celebrate the 20th anniversary of "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith," which is set to return to theaters in April 2025, they have the chance to revisit Anakin Skywalker’s heartbreaking journey, from his rise within the Jedi Order to his eventual turn to the dark side.

When filming for the third episode commenced in the summer of 2000, Hayden Christensen was only 19 years old. The young Canadian actor, who gained recognition for his role in the series "Higher Ground," where he played a teenager facing abuse, was one of many hopefuls auditioning for this coveted role.

In total, nearly 1,500 actors reportedly vied for the chance to become the future Anakin Skywalker. Prior to the official announcement of Hayden Christensen as the chosen one on May 12, 2000, several names circulated in Hollywood, including that of a rising star: Paul Walker.

A Dream of Joining George Lucas’s Galaxy

At that time, Paul Walker was still in the early stages of his ascent in Hollywood. A long-time fan of the universe created by George Lucas, Walker was already carving out a promising career after making his film debut in 1986 with "Monster in the Closet."

He was in the midst of filming a project that would change his life: "The Fast and the Furious." Released in 2001, the film quickly catapulted him to international fame through his portrayal of Brian O’Conner.

Despite not landing a role in "Star Wars," the opportunity to join that universe remained a significant memory for Walker. Years later, he expressed his disappointment at not securing the role, sharing his thoughts on the competition:

Joshua Jackson was apparently in talks to play Anakin. I couldn’t say anything, but part of me was like, ‘You better not get it instead of me!’ At the same time, I would have been happier if he got it rather than Hayden Christensen_, some unknown guy from Canada._”

Another Superhero Role Slips Away

Fate could have bestowed upon Paul Walker several major Hollywood franchises. After being considered for Anakin Skywalker, he was also among the names mentioned for the role of Superman in "Superman Returns," directed by Bryan Singer and released in 2006.

Ultimately, the iconic superhero costume went to Brandon Routh, but this missed opportunity further underscored the interest studios had in Walker, who was seen as one of the promising actors of his generation.

A Legacy Defined by Fast & Furious and a Tragic End

Although he never joined the "Star Wars" universe, Paul Walker found his family within the "Fast & Furious" franchise. Over the years, he formed deep bonds with co-stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, and the rest of the cast. This relationship transcended professional boundaries, becoming a vital part of his life.

Tragically, while filming "Fast & Furious 7," Walker lost his life in a car accident in 2013 at the age of 40. His friends, colleagues, and millions of fans worldwide paid tribute to a man who had become a beloved figure in action cinema.
