Newcastle United Appoints Matthias Jaissle as New Head Coach

Newcastle United has officially named Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach, taking over from Eddie Howe.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Jaissle, 38, has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until June 2030. The Magpies will pay a transfer fee of eleven million euros to his former club, Al Ahli.

Jaissle succeeds Eddie Howe, 48, who announced his resignation on Thursday. The German coach has a successful track record, having led Al Ahli to victory in the AFC Champions League last season after joining the club in July 2023.

Prior to his stint in Saudi Arabia, Jaissle spent two years at RB Salzburg, where he secured two league titles. This marks his debut in the Premier League.

Fourth German Coach in the Premier League

Jaissle joins a growing list of German coaches in the Premier League, following Daniel Farke at Leeds, Fabian Hürzeler at Brighton, and Marco Rose at Bournemouth. He was also reportedly in contention for the head coach position at AC Milan before taking the role at Newcastle.

At Newcastle, Jaissle inherits a squad undergoing significant changes. This summer, the Magpies have made several key signings, including Aladji Bamba for 35 million euros from AS Monaco and Ajax talent Sean Steur, alongside Bazoumana Touré for 50 million euros from Hoffenheim.

Notable Departures

The financially-backed club has seen several prominent players leave, necessitating replacements. Captain Bruno Guimarães is set to join Arsenal, while Sandro Tonali has moved to Tottenham for over 100 million euros, and Anthony Gordon has transferred to FC Barcelona for 80 million euros.
