In the mid-2000s, Harrison Ford turned down a role in "Syriana" due to a lack of conviction. A choice he would come to regret: the character ultimately earned George Clooney an Oscar. Here's a look back at a decision that could have changed his career.

In the Hollywood landscape, Harrison Ford is one of those figures who has rarely doubted his career decisions. Known for embodying iconic characters, he has often declined significant offers without ever really being troubled by it. However, in hindsight, the actor now acknowledges that one particular choice continues to leave a bitter taste in his mouth.

Because even the greatest careers are not immune to a missed role that changes everything...

Prestigious Opportunities Passed Up

Over the years, Ford has seen several major projects come and go. Some could have marked an additional turning point in his filmography, but he chose to pass. For instance, he declined to portray Jack Ryan in the film "The Hunt for Red October," a role ultimately given to Alec Baldwin under the direction of John McTiernan.

Another missed opportunity was the role of Dr. Alan Grant in "Jurassic Park." Steven Spielberg, with whom he had previously collaborated on "Raiders of the Lost Ark," had suggested the idea to him, particularly during an anniversary screening of the film. The character was ultimately played by Sam Neill.

Ford also let slip other significant roles, such as in the thriller "Misery" or the action film "Die Hard," where it was ultimately Bruce Willis who became the iconic John McClane.

His Only True Regret

Until then, these refusals seemed to belong to the past for Harrison Ford. But one project, in particular, changed the game.

Warner Bros. Pictures

In an interview with the Irish Examiner in 2006, the actor admitted he regretted turning down the film "Syriana," directed by Stephen Gaghan. The role was ultimately awarded to George Clooney, whose performance earned him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Ford candidly explained his choice: "I wasn't convincing enough about the material's authenticity, and I think I made a mistake."

An Incomplete Recognition

This regret takes on a particular dimension in Harrison Ford's career. Despite an impressive filmography and iconic roles, the actor has never won an Oscar.

He has only been nominated once, in 1986, for his role in "Witness." This recognition remains, even today, his only nomination for the prestigious awards.

"Syriana" is still available on VOD for those who wish to (re)discover the role that could have changed his trajectory at the Oscars.
