Good American Family: What Happened to the Real Natalia Grace?

The Natalia Grace case is at the heart of the series "Good American Family" featuring Ellen Pompeo. But how does it end, and what happened to the young girl?

After portraying Meredith Grey for twenty years in Grey's Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo stars in the series Good American Family. Available on Disney+, this astonishing new project showcases her in a new light and is loosely inspired by an incredible true story.

Comprising 8 episodes, Good American Family tells the story of Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass), a Midwest couple who adopt Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid), whom they believe to be a Ukrainian girl with a rare form of dwarfism.

As they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, they slowly start to believe that she may not be who she claims to be...

How Does the Series End?

This troubling drama, narrated from multiple character perspectives to explore issues of viewpoints, biases, and trauma, is inspired by the astonishing true story of Natalia Grace that made headlines in American media.

After a lengthy legal battle, a resolution finally unfolds in the last episode of Good American Family. The Barnetts, although separated, prepare their defense against Natalia's accusations. Michael is increasingly stressed and questions Kristine's intentions and what really happened.

Kristine tries to manipulate him into standing against Natalia during the trial. Meanwhile, Natalia's biological mother has come forward in the press with official birth documents proving that Natalia did not lie and was indeed a young girl at the time the Barnetts adopted her.

Michael and Kristine Barnett find themselves in a very precarious position, but the fact that the state did not appeal the decision regarding Natalia's age in 2017 will play in their favor in this legal battle. The charges against Michael and Kristine are ultimately dropped.

Even though justice has not been served, Michael and Kristine realize the impact of the case on their lives. Kristine receives death threats and negative comments, her circle questions her, and her future as a writer is in jeopardy.

On his part, Michael is introspective, especially when Natalia visits him to seek explanations. Michael struggles to take responsibility and admit his wrongs, but it becomes clear that he did nothing to help Natalia and was under Kristin's influence.

Finally, Natalia, still living with the Mans who took her in after the Barnetts abandoned her, realizes that the media and public opinion, which labeled her a "psychopathic dwarf" when the case broke, are now on her side and offering support.

What Happened to Natalia Grace?

The final episode of Good American Family ends with some insights into the recent reality of the case, read by Ellen Pompeo, Mark Duplass, and Imogen Faith Reid:

"Since the end of this series, allegations of abuse against Antwon and Cynthia Mans have emerged. They claim their innocence, just like Kristin Barnett to this day. But in 2024, with the help of a lawyer, Natalia obtained a U.S. passport that officially restored her birth date to September 4, 2003, making her only 21 years old at the time of the series' release."

The last episode of Good American Family is closer to reality than the more dramatized previous episodes. Prosecutors were not allowed to present evidence that Natalia was a minor born in 2003 when she was left alone in an apartment.

The neglect case was therefore judged based on Natalia's disability, not her age. The Barnetts were then only charged for these facts, but Michael was acquitted in 2022, and the charges against Kristine were dropped in 2023.

In August 2023, a DNA test estimated that Natalia Grace was about 22 years old, suggesting she was 8 years old when the Barnetts abandoned her alone in an apartment and that she had indeed told the truth.

Shortly after, the Mans, who had taken in Natalia Grace, faced allegations of extortion and abuse against Natalia. Even though they claim their innocence, Natalia Grace found a new foster family, the DePauls, who had initially tried to adopt Natalia before her adoption by the Barnetts.

The DePauls, with whom she now lives, helped her obtain legal services to try to recover her funds. For more information, the Natalia Grace case has been covered in "The Natalia Grace Enigma," a three-season documentary series on Investigation Discovery, available on the Max platform in France.

"Good American Family" airs Wednesdays at 9:10 PM on TF1 in batches of four episodes on June 17 and 24, 2026. It is also available on TF1+.
