Footballer Embarks on 9,000-Kilometer Journey by Bike to Find His Father

Kevin Dabo, a native of Cologne, is embarking on an extraordinary adventure: a 9,000-kilometer trek from Düren to Ghana, primarily on foot and by bicycle.

This ambitious journey, which Dabo plans to complete solely through cycling and walking, is a testament to his physical endurance. The 32-year-old former footballer, who had a career that included time in the Regionalliga West and now works as a fitness trainer, aims to reach Accra, the capital of Ghana.

Dabo is eschewing all motorized transport, relying entirely on his own strength and occasionally using ferries to cover the vast distance, as reported by the "Aachener Zeitung."

A Personal Quest: Searching for His Father

The motivation behind this monumental trip is deeply personal. Dabo was just three years old when his father left the family without a word, leading to nearly three decades of silence.

However, two years ago, a surprising message arrived on his phone from his father. Initially met with disbelief, Dabo found reassurance in old photos confirming the sender's identity. This revelation has led to sporadic communication since then.

Through his journey to Ghana, Dabo hopes to find answers, reconnect with his African roots, and come to terms with the long separation. In his search, he also discovered that he has eight half-siblings, one of whom resides in Cologne.

Daily Challenges: Half Marathons and the Sahara

Dabo originally planned to embark on this adventure last year, but an Achilles tendon injury forced him to postpone. After months of rigorous training, he now feels ready to tackle the challenge ahead. His daily regimen is formidable, consisting of a half marathon on foot and an additional 60 kilometers by bike.

In the initial stages through France and Spain, Dabo will be accompanied by friends and a cameraman. However, once he reaches Morocco, the journey will turn into a solitary endeavor. He will navigate through the Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast, ultimately arriving in Ghana.
