Epic and Dark: "Dune: Part Three" Promises a Spectacular Sci-Fi War Thriller
The first seven minutes of "Dune: Part Three" suggest an intense and darker installment in the sci-fi series, promising a thrilling conclusion to the saga.

The anticipation for "Dune: Part Three" is palpable, as early glimpses suggest it will be the most intense installment in the franchise. After witnessing the first seven minutes of the film, it’s clear that director Denis Villeneuve is set to deliver a gripping conclusion to his trilogy, which began with "Dune" in 2021 and continued with "Dune: Part Two" in 2024. This time, Villeneuve adapts the sequel, "Der Herr des Wüstenplaneten" ("Dune Messiah"), following the events of the previous films.
The narrative picks up approximately twenty years after "Dune: Part Two", where Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet) grapples with the devastating consequences of the Holy War waged in his name. As he navigates his rule, a looming political conspiracy threatens his power, pushing him into a dark psychological battle against both foes and former allies.
To build excitement, Warner Bros. hosted an exclusive IMAX fan event for "Dune: Part Three" in ten cities worldwide, including Los Angeles, Montreal, London, and Berlin. I attended the event in Berlin, where not only was the opening scene screened, but a new trailer was also revealed, which can be viewed here:

War Instead of Desert: The Start of "Dune: Part Three"
At the fan event, the first seven minutes of "Dune: Part Three" transported viewers back to the world of Arrakis, but instead of vast dunes, the scene opens on a battlefield. An army prepares for an assault on a rain-soaked planet. Before the attack commences, a quiet moment unfolds aboard their ship, showcasing a small group of soldiers offering silent prayers. The only familiar face in this tense setting is Javier Bardem as Stilgar. As the ships land in the sand, he leads the troops into the rain, only to soon face enemy forces, leading to a perilous situation as deadly laser fire rains down from above.
Two notable aspects immediately caught my attention. Firstly, the presence of rain on Arrakis, a planet known for its arid climate. For those familiar with Frank Herbert's "Dune Messiah," this detail hints at significant developments in the story. Secondly, the depiction of warfare was striking. Accompanied by Hans Zimmer's thunderous score, the sequence evokes a blend of "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Saving Private Ryan," amplified by the visual prowess of a modern blockbuster.
Denis Villeneuve & Timothée Chalamet Discuss the Epic Finale
Following the presentation, a live interview with Denis Villeneuve and Timothée Chalamet was broadcast to the IMAX screens in participating cities. Villeneuve shared insights about how "Dune: Part Three" will feel more like a thriller, promising a distinctively intense experience. Chalamet echoed this sentiment, stating, "The first two films are like siblings. This one has a new energy."
Eagerly Awaiting "Dune: Part Three"
Since watching "Dune: Part Two" in IMAX in 2024, my anticipation for "Dune: Part Three" has only intensified. The recently revealed opening scene and trailer have heightened my excitement to unprecedented levels. The darker trajectory of the story holds the potential to surpass its predecessors. The material showcased left me exhilarated, and I can hardly wait for the adrenaline rush that "Dune: Part Three" is sure to deliver in theaters.
"Dune: Part Three" is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2026. If you wish to revisit the first two installments, they are available on HBO Max.
