Late spring brings us the breathtaking beauty of peony flowers. However, those of us with peonies in our gardens may also notice the appearance of ants, especially at the base of the peonies or on the unopened buds.
Do Peonies Need Ants for Blooming?
No, ants are not necessary for peonies to bloom. Although ants are often found on peony buds as they feed on the sweet nectar, the flowers will open normally with or without ants. This relationship is mutually beneficial: ants get food, while peonies receive protection from certain pest insects.
Are Ants Harmful to Peonies?
No. Absolutely not. You shouldn’t even try to brush these ants away—or worse, use insecticides! Ants are not only NOT harmful but also exemplify biological mutualism. Peonies provide ants with nectar (food), and ants protect peonies from aphids, thrips, and other harmful insects.
Moreover, ants are temporary inhabitants. Once the peony blooms, the ants will leave the flower and search for other food sources.
How to Get Rid of Ants on Peonies Before Bringing Them Indoors
We greatly appreciate our pink, red, and old-fashioned white peonies in the garden, but we also love to fill our home with their beauty and fragrance. However, how can we avoid bringing ants indoors? Here are 3 ways.
- Cut the peonies early in the morning when the dew is still thick and most ants have not yet appeared. Hold the peonies by the stem just below the flower (to avoid breaking the head) and turn the flowers upside down. Gently tap the stems just above the flowers a few times. This will help dislodge insects and arachnids.
- Fill a large bowl with cool water outside, then dip each peony flower into it and watch the ants crawl out. Don’t fill the bowl too much, or they will be able to crawl out. Then gently shake the water off the flower and place the stem in a suitable vase to prevent ants from hitching a ride. After that, release the ants and water from the bowl back into nature.
- Another method used by professional florists is to cut peony flowers before the buds fully open so that the buds can bloom indoors.
Let’s remember, earlier "Telegraph" discussed what flowers and vegetables can still be planted in June.
