Distribution of LaLiga TV Revenue for the 2026/27 Season Explained
An in-depth look at the distribution of LaLiga's TV revenues for the 2026/27 season, detailing the legal framework, revenue allocation, and future projections.
Distribution of LaLiga TV Revenue for the 2026/27 Season Explained
The 2026/27 season marks the final year of the current media rights cycle in Spain, with a significantly larger contract set to commence in 2027/28. However, the distribution model will remain unchanged, as it has been legally established since 2015, making it a unique case in Europe.
In brief: 90% of centrally marketed media revenues will be allocated to the Primera División, while 10% will go to the Segunda División. Within the Primera División, 50% is distributed equally among clubs, 25% is allocated based on performance over the last five seasons, and 25% is determined by "social embedding" (ticket sales plus TV reach). A legal cap restricts the revenue gap between the top and bottom clubs to a maximum of 3.5 times.
1. Legal Framework: Real Decreto-ley 5/2015
Spain stands out as the only major European league where media revenue distribution is governed by state law rather than a league decision. The Real Decreto-ley 5/2015, enacted on April 30, 2015 (BOE No. 104), mandated centralized marketing, which was previously handled individually by clubs.
The criteria for distribution are outlined in Article 5, with solidarity deductions specified in Article 6.1. The Órgano de Control de la Gestión de los Derechos Audiovisuales within LaLiga is responsible for calculating the figures and must publish them before the end of the calendar year in which the season begins.
Relevance for 2026/27: The official club-by-club figures for the 2026/27 season will only be published in December 2026. Until then, amounts can only be estimated, but the mechanics of distribution are fully known.
2. Stage 1 – The Split Between Divisions: 90 / 10
According to Article 5.2:
| Competition | Share of Total Revenues | |-------------|-------------------------| | Primera División (LaLiga EA SPORTS) | 90% | | Segunda División (LaLiga HYPERMOTION) | 10% |
This split applies before solidarity deductions and is independent of the number of clubs.
3. Stage 2 – Distribution Within the Primera División
Article 5.3 divides the Primera revenue pool into three components:
| Component | Share | Distribution Key | |-----------|-------|------------------| | Equal Share (partes iguales) | 50% | Distributed equally among all 20 clubs | | Performance Results (resultados deportivos) | 25% | Based on placements over the last five seasons | | Social Embedding (implantación social) | 25% | 1/3 from ticketing, 2/3 from TV contributions |
3.1 Performance Results Component (25%)
Unlike the Bundesliga, this component considers not just the last season. The amount is distributed over five seasons:
| Season | Weight | |--------|--------| | Last completed season | 35% | | Previous season | 20% | | Third previous season | 15% | | Fourth previous season | 15% | | Fifth previous season | 15% |
Distribution within each season tranche is based on final standings, with a steep degressive curve as detailed in the law:
| Position | Share | Position | Share | |----------|-------|----------|-------| | 1. | 17.00% | 11. | 2.50% | | 2. | 15.00% | 12. | 2.25% | | 3. | 13.00% | 13. | 2.00% | | 4. | 11.00% | 14. | 1.75% | | 5. | 9.00% | 15. | 1.50% | | 6. | 7.00% | 16. | 1.25% | | 7. | 5.00% | 17. | 1.00% | | 8. | 3.50% | 18. | 0.75% | | 9. | 3.00% | 19. | 0.50% | | 10. | 2.75% | 20. | 0.25% |
Notably, the curve is extremely steep in the top third. The difference between the first and seventh places is 12 percentage points, while the gap from seventh to twentieth is only 4.75.
3.2 Social Embedding Component (25%)
This component is a key reason why Real Madrid and FC Barcelona consistently dominate. It consists of two parts:
- One-third: Revenue from season tickets and average spectator revenue over the last five seasons
- Two-thirds: Relative contribution of the club to generating TV revenues (audience reach and subscriber relevance)
Two legal corrections limit the spread:
- Upper limit: No club can receive more than 20% of this component. Any excess is redistributed proportionally to others.
- Lower limit: No club can receive less than 2% of this component.
The specific criteria for audience reach are based on decisions from divisional assemblies (e.g., on 11.12.2015 and 04.08.2023); additional criteria were established post-COVID (decision on 29.06.2022).
3.3 The Cap: Maximum Factor of 3.5
Article 5.5 caps the spread after calculations are completed. The rule is tiered:
| Distribution Volume | Maximum Factor (highest to lowest club) | |---------------------|-----------------------------------------| | Up to 1,000 million € | 4.5 | | 1,000–1,500 million € | Decreasing sliding scale | | Above 1,500 million € | 3.5 |
The assessment also includes payments from the relegation compensation fund and other remuneration that clubs receive from rights holders. If the factor is exceeded, all club shares are proportionally reduced to assist lower-placed clubs.
Context: Currently, LaLiga operates at a factor of around 4 between the highest and lowest paid first-division clubs, which is significantly tighter than the historical spread during individual marketing (which at times exceeded 10:1) but still wider than in the Bundesliga.
4. Stage 3 – Solidarity Deductions as per Article 6.1
Each club must contribute a portion of its allocated media revenues:
| Purpose | Share | |---------|-------| | Compensation fund for relegated clubs (Fondo de Compensación) | 2.5% | | LaLiga – marketing/promotion of the league | 1.0% | | RFEF – amateur football & association infrastructure | 2.0% | | CSD – social security for elite athletes | up to 1.0% | | CSD – women’s football, third league, player unions | up to 0.5% | | CSD – support for Olympic/Paralympic sports | 1.5% | | Total | up to 8.5% |
From the compensation fund, 90% goes to relegated clubs from the Primera División and 10% to relegated clubs from the Segunda División. The payments are regulated in Book VIII of LaLiga statutes.
This fund serves as the Spanish equivalent to the English "Parachute Payment" and significantly influences Segunda distribution: In the 2024/25 season, Cádiz CF received approximately €22.6 million, which was about three times that of the fourth-placed club, as the relegation aid often surpasses the regular distribution of the second division.
5. The Segunda División (LaLiga HYPERMOTION)
Different rules apply to the second division:
- At least 70% of the Segunda pool is distributed equally among clubs (compared to 50% in the Primera).
- In the "performance results" criterion, only the last season counts – no five-year weighting.
- Given that the Segunda has more than 20 participants (22 clubs), the percentage distribution of placements is adjusted while maintaining progression.
- The 3.5 cap also applies, including relegation compensations.
6. How Large is the Pool for 2026/27?
6.1 The Current Cycle
The national rights for the Primera División for the seasons 2022/23 to 2026/27 were sold for a total of €4.95 billion to Telefónica (Movistar Plus+) and DAZN, with each broadcasting five games per matchday, equating to approximately €990 million per season just for the national residential market. Additional revenues come from HORECA rights, free TV/highlights, the Segunda División, and significant international rights.
6.2 Reference Value: 2024/25 Season
The most recently published distribution (released in December 2025) shows the following for the 42 clubs across both divisions:
| Position | Amount | |----------|--------| | Primera División (20 clubs) | €1.292 billion | | Segunda División (22 clubs) | €140.03 million | | Total | €1.432 billion |
This represented a decline of approximately €65 million compared to the previous season, primarily due to a payment default from the former marketing partner in China amounting to around €45 million. LaLiga mitigated this through a financing line from Banco Santander of €16.7 million.
Top Distribution (2024/25):
| Club | Amount | |------|--------| | Real Madrid | €157.92 million | | FC Barcelona | €156.45 million | | Atlético Madrid | €108.20 million | | Villarreal CF | €57.80 million | | Girona FC | €55.60 million | | Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Real Betis, and Sevilla FC each received over €60 million. Valencia CF was the last club to exceed the €50 million mark; six clubs (Osasuna, Celta, Getafe, Mallorca, Alavés, Espanyol) received between €43 million and €48 million. CD Leganés was the only club below €40 million. Together, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético accounted for approximately 33% of the Primera pool.
6.3 Model Calculation for 2026/27
As the 2026/27 season is the last of the existing contract, a pool of approximately €1.3 to €1.45 billion is plausible. Based on this, the value of individual placements can be estimated.
Assumption: Primera pool = €1.292 billion (2024/25 level). Performance results component = 25% = €323 million. Of this, 35% = €113.1 million pertains to the last completed season.
| Final Position | Value from Last Season Tranche (35%) | Theoretical Maximum Value at Identical Placement Across All 5 Seasons | |----------------|--------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------------------| | 1. | €19.22 million | €54.91 million | | 2. | €16.96 million | €48.45 million | | 3. | €14.70 million | €41.99 million | | 4. | €12.44 million | €35.53 million | | 5. | €10.18 million | €29.07 million | | 6. | €7.91 million | €22.61 million | | 7. | €5.65 million | €16.15 million | | 8. | €3.96 million | €11.31 million | | 9. | €3.39 million | €9.69 million | | 10. | €3.11 million | €8.88 million | | 11. | €2.83 million | €8.08 million | | 12. | €2.54 million | €7.27 million | | 13. | €2.26 million | €6.46 million | | 14. | €1.98 million | €5.65 million | | 15. | €1.70 million | €4.85 million | | 16. | €1.41 million | €4.04 million | | 17. | €1.13 million | €3.23 million | | 18. | €0.85 million | €2.42 million | | 19. | €0.57 million | €1.62 million | | 20. | €0.28 million | €0.81 million |
This calculation is based on Article 5.3.b).1º RD-ley 5/2015. These are model values, not official figures.
For comparison, the equal share alone amounts to approximately €32.3 million per club (50% of €1.292 billion divided by 20).
7. From 2027/28: The Next Cycle
LaLiga has already awarded national rights for the seasons 2027/28 to 2031/32:
| Segment | Volume (5 Seasons) | |---------|-------------------| | Primera División, Residential (Telefónica + DAZN) | over €5.25 billion | | HORECA (Hospitality/Hotel Industry) | €650 million | | Segunda División (LaLiga HYPERMOTION) | €175 million | | Free-TV & Highlights | €60 million | | Total National | over €6.135 billion |
This represents a 9% increase compared to the 2022-2027 cycle and approximately €1.23 billion per season from the domestic market alone. Telefónica and DAZN will continue to broadcast five matches per matchday, with Telefónica having first choice for 19 matchdays each season, including the return leg of the Clásico.
Implication for Distribution: If the total volume exceeds the threshold of €1.5 billion, the strictest cap of 3.5 will automatically apply, further narrowing the gap between the top and bottom of the table as the pool grows.
8. Two Pending Issues
Supreme Court Ruling (December 2025). The Supreme Court ruled in decision 1565/2025 that the "Disposición Adicional Segunda" inserted into LaLiga statutes in 2015 was invalid, as it altered the distribution for the 2015/16 season without legal basis. Real Madrid estimates the consequence to be approximately €88 million in back payments to the then-second division clubs, as well as €8.8 million to their own club. LaLiga contends that this was a previously annulled norm. The resolution is still pending but pertains only to a past season – not the calculation logic for 2026/27.
LaLiga Impulso (CVC). Clubs that agreed in 2021 to the investment from CVC will cede a portion of their media revenues over 50 years. Real Madrid estimated this share at 10.95% and opposed the conditions set forth in the agreement.
