In 1987, this work became an instant classic and revealed a certain Patrick Swayze! A line that has since gone down in history was hated by the actor, who was very reluctant to say it.

A cult and generational film par excellence, Dirty Dancing marked the 80s before becoming a great classic! It introduced Jennifer Grey in the role of Frances "Baby" Houseman but it especially launched the career of a certain Patrick Swayze, who left a lasting impression with his fiery dance moves as Johnny Castle!

While the feature film is obviously iconic for its dance sequences and the passionate duo between Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, it is also unintentionally funny due to some of its lines that are considered... a bit ridiculous.

We particularly think of the famous line from Baby directed at Johnny, which made many spectators laugh: "Johnny, stop chasing your destiny like a wild horse." The talented dancer is not left out with the biting: "Go make your spaghetti foam and leave the rest for the heavyweights."

A Line That Became Mythical

But if there is one line that has transcended decades, becoming almost the emblem of the film, it is this one: "Nobody puts Baby in a corner!" It occurs at the end of the film, during the end-of-season party at the resort where the story takes place.

Baby is sitting at a table, with her back to the wall; she is somewhat sidelined by her family and the organizers, even though she has experienced an intense and transformative love story with Johnny. The young man, who had been sent away earlier, returns to find her and take her dancing one last time. He enters the room, strides towards her with determination, and declares this famous line before taking her on stage.

Nobody puts Baby in a corner!

They dance together to the song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," in an iconic choreography, including the famous final jump where Baby leaps into Johnny's arms. The line, often mocked for its somewhat cheesy and ridiculous aspect, has nonetheless become legendary.

Patrick Swayze Hated This Line

Indeed, it marks the moment when Johnny defies social conventions and asserts Baby's importance, not only as a dancer but as a person capable of expressing herself freely. It is a declaration of respect, love, and personal affirmation. Yet, Patrick Swayze did not want to say it!

The actor found the line too kitschy, corny, and implausible. He thought it sounded artificial and did not fit his character, Johnny Castle, naturally. In his autobiography titled Time of My Life, co-written with his wife Lisa Niemi, he explains:

"I couldn't stand that line. It sounded like something a guy would try to say to look cool, but it would come off as false. I thought it was ridiculous." Patrick Swayze even tried to convince the producers and the director, Emile Ardolino, to cut or change it, but they insisted on keeping it as is.

Ironically, this line that he hated has become one of the most iconic of his career. Today, it is part of pop culture and is immediately associated with Dirty Dancing. Who hasn't ever used this phrase to point out someone sitting or posted in the corner of a room?
