Vincent Cassel didn’t just act in "Ocean’s Twelve": he conceived one of the film’s most memorable scenes, with complete freedom from Steven Soderbergh. A performance that left him utterly exhausted!

Among the many striking scenes in Ocean’s Twelve, one owes a lot to Vincent Cassel’s involvement. The French actor didn’t just interpret his role: he contributed to the design of an iconic sequence, at the cost of considerable physical effort.
When he discovered the film’s script in 2004, Vincent Cassel envisioned a very different approach for the famous laser scene. Having practiced capoeira for many years, he believed that this Brazilian martial art would add a more spectacular dimension to the sequence.
A personal idea that impressed Steven Soderbergh
To convince the director, he showed him several videos of fights as well as clips made by the Kourtrajmé collective. He also suggested using a track by the group La Caution to accompany the scene. Impressed by these proposals, Steven Soderbergh accepted all of his ideas.
Even more surprisingly, the filmmaker granted him complete freedom to prepare the sequence. Despite the very high cost of renting the museum that served as the set, he entrusted him, in the actor’s words, "the keys to the truck".
Rediscover the scene in question below:
A particularly grueling shooting day
Vincent Cassel was able to rehearse in the morning with a small team before being joined in the afternoon by Steven Soderbergh and the rest of the technical crew to film this action scene.
Even with regular training and meticulous preparation, the actor is not a professional stuntman. Between jumps, rolls, dance moves, and the many figures to chain together, this shooting day proved to be particularly grueling.
At the end of this sequence, the performer, already accustomed to physical roles, notably in Le Pacte des Loups, was completely drained. He even admitted: "If I had been asked to do another day like this, I wouldn’t have been able to do it!"

An effort rewarded on screen
Despite this exhausting experience, the result remains one of the most memorable moments of Ocean’s Twelve. And this performance did not deter Vincent Cassel, who continued to put his physical condition to the test in demanding roles in Jason Bourne and L’Empereur de Paris.
Ocean’s Twelve is available for streaming on Canal+ and HBO Max.
