A Charming Performer

Anthony Stewart Head, born in London in 1954, began his career on stage in the late 1970s after training at LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art). He first gained recognition from the British public through the famous Nescafé Gold Blend commercials aired in the 1980s.

An accomplished stage actor, he notably shone in musicals such as Godspell, Chess, and The Rocky Horror Show. His career took an international dimension in 1997 when he portrayed Rupert Giles, the mentor of Buffy Summers, in the cult series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This role, which he played for 7 seasons, made him an iconic figure on television.

Eternal Giles

Rupert Giles is the librarian at Sunnydale High School and the Watcher responsible for guiding Buffy in her mission as a vampire slayer. Cultured, scholarly, and deeply devoted, he serves as a mentor and father figure to the group.

Beneath his reserved appearance and British phlegm lies a courageous man, ready to confront the forces of evil to protect his loved ones. Over the course of the series, he becomes one of the most respected and endearing characters in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe.

After the cult show ended, Anthony Head returned to the UK; the actor continued to enjoy success with Manchild and then Little Britain, where he played the British Prime Minister. In 2006, his notable appearance in Doctor Who was praised by fans of the series. From 2008 to 2012, he portrayed King Uther Pendragon in the series Merlin.

The actor then pursued an eclectic career in film, television, and radio, appearing in projects such as The Iron Lady, Motherland, and Ted Lasso, where his character Rupert Mannion captivated a new generation of viewers. An actor with understated charisma and a warm presence, Anthony Head leaves behind the image of a performer who was both popular and respected, with a career spanning nearly five decades.
