Avengers: Eight Years Ago, While Filming This Heartbreaking Scene, Robert Downey Jr. Struggled to Hold Back His Emotions

Recently interviewed by CBR, the actor who portrays Tony Stark recounted the filming of the famous scene where half of the Avengers disappear after Thanos snaps his fingers in "Infinity War".

This is undoubtedly one of the most heartbreaking scenes (if not THE most heartbreaking) in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, after successfully obtaining the 6 Infinity Stones and embedding them one by one into his Gauntlet, the Titan Thanos snaps his fingers and finally puts his plan into action.

"I Wanted to Have That Shocked and Desperate Look"

In front of the stunned gazes of the survivors and the audience discovering the scene in theaters, half of the film's heroes literally turn to dust. Tragic and heartbreaking, this incredible sequence forced a good portion of the audience to pull out their tissues, but it also represented an emotionally challenging moment for the film's actors.

Thus, Robert Downey Jr., who plays the indomitable Iron Man, recently shared how the filming of the scene went for him, particularly the disappearance of Peter Parker, portrayed by Tom Holland, who vaporized in his arms.

"I wanted to have that shocked and desperate look," he confided to CBR.

"Holland Was on Fire"

"I knew that Tom Holland, at that point, was kind of a veteran. Was it his third Marvel film? He was on his third, and he had already figured everything out. He wondered if he could bring that or not. And he just broke our hearts."

And director Joe Russo confirmed: "I was crying behind my monitor."

"At that moment, I thought I shouldn’t move, because Holland was on fire, and I wanted to see how it would turn out," Robert Downey Jr. continued.

"And he was able to direct that moment. He truly carried all the emotional impact of the film in 8 seconds."
