With over 100 roles to his credit, Tom Hanks is considered one of the best actors of his generation. It's worth noting that the interpreter of Forrest Gump knows perfectly how to choose his characters on screen...

Tom Hanks has more than 100 roles in films and series, two Oscars for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, and Golden Globes for, among others, Cast Away and Big. When we take stock of all the characters he has portrayed over 46 years of career, we notice the great diversity that emanates from it. It must be said that the actor, now 69 years old, has a very specific criterion for choosing his roles on screen.
How Does Tom Hanks Choose His Roles?
In a recent interview, Tom Hanks shared rare insights into how he decides whether or not to embody a character on screen. For the actor, it’s not about acting technique, but about maturity. He notably revealed that he told a director: "I don’t have the countenance". In other words, he felt that he was not yet, or perhaps never would be, the right person to tell that story because he had not lived what was necessary to embody it authentically.
He also added these words about his view on acting, and more specifically about the power of the gaze: "There is something that we all carry within us. Our gaze is the fruit of everything we have said, of all the work we have done, of all our successes and all our failures, because both are inseparable".
Tom Hanks reveals the countenance theory that decides every role he takes

"Exploring New Territory"
For Tom Hanks, it is not enough to play a character; one must first live it. In this same candid interview, he reveals the importance, in his eyes, of stepping out of his comfort zone and continually learning more about himself or others:
"This idea of leaving a project knowing that we have explored new territory, a theme that only we could have approached, because we challenged each other and succeeded in bringing it to fruition".
There is no doubt that with all the roles he has played, from the naive yet authentic Forrest Gump to John Miller in Saving Private Ryan, not to mention Captain Phillips or the survivor Chuck Noland in Cast Away, Tom Hanks has stepped out of his comfort zone countless times...
